It is fitting that the 1.6 release of Ubercart should coincide with commit number 1337 in our development repository. Even though it is a minor release, it represents a major improvement to the core credit card module that will benefit a lot of our users. Through some sponsored core development funded by Chapter Three, LLC I was able to work in improvements to the credit card terminal and underlying API to allow payment gateway modules to support:
Well, it's no secret, we've been moving forward for some time now. We're especially anxious to get on Drupal 6 and take advantage of the many core Drupal changes that will make Ubercart an even more solid e-commerce system. There are still some loose ends that need to be wrapped up and plenty of bug testing that should go on before we release a beta version we can be proud of. Those itching to help get Ubercart on Drupal 6 can grab and test the latest code from Bazaar.
We just wanted to let everyone know that we've finally moved into our new office building a few blocks down from our old home where Ubercart was born. The restaurant equipment company that supports Ubercart has continued to expand, and it's taking us with it to a much nicer facility that was custom built for our family of companies. We'll be joining a few other businesses but will have a decidedly geeky piece of office real estate carved out for Ubercart developers.
Ahh, the smell of another fresh release. This one comes only two weeks after the previous release to address a couple of issues created by adjustments to the tax system in the last release. I hope everyone survived, and I hope even that more you can appreciate the rest of the release as well.
This release brings with it three notable new features:
Woohoo! It's been a month and a half since the last release, which is mostly a sign of a stable codebase but also a sign of our general busy-ness these last few weeks. Almost over-busy, if I do say so myself. This release does pack a punch, with something like 51 commits available for your viewing pleasure in a short changelog found in the release notes.
I, for one, am impressed. A storm that originated in the Atlantic Ocean and tore through the Caribbean had enough power to send shivers all the way up the U.S. to Chicago, nailing Louisville, KY on the way.
We didn't get any rain, but there was plenty of wind (gusts up to 75 MPH) that knocked down a lot of trees and power lines. Most of our houses are without power and might be for a few days, and power was out at the office for a day or so as well. Any outages of Ubercart.org are the result of the storm, but I think we're fine now with power back in the office.
I'm writing now from my living room after a hectic day of travel back to the U.S. from Hungary. We had a wonderful time in Budapest and in Szeged for Drupalcon. We made some good connections with folks we've met in the past and with new faces from around Europe and the U.S.
Lullabot recently announced a Drupal training conference called Do It With Drupal which will go above and beyond their normal, sold-out workshops. Attendees can expect to learn a lot about Drupal and its major contributed modules from the developers themselves. If you're investigating Drupal or Ubercart for your business or are considering developing sites more regularly, I highly recommend looking into this conference. It'll be worth the price!
Here's an announcement everyone who uses this site can appreciate... we now have a vastly improved search system courtesy of Mike O'Connor who took the time during and after Ubercamp to install and configure Apache Solr. This provides much faster searching and a few very handy blocks that let you sort and filter your search results!
